McGuinty prefers high cost nuclear over affordable hydro

Premier McGuinty prefers high-cost new nuclear projects rather than low-cost water power imports from Quebec, according to his response to an Ontario Clean Air Alliance election questionnaire.

In 2010, Vermont electric utilities signed an agreement to import clean, reliable water power from Quebec for 26 years at a starting price of less than 6 cents a kWh. Nevertheless, Premier McGuinty does not believe that Ontario should seek to negotiate a long-term contract with Hydro Quebec before pursuing new nuclear projects which would be at least three times more expensive.

On the other hand, Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner supports importing “cheap, clean hydroelectric power from Quebec” and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath believes that hydro imports “are an option that should be explored”. Conservative Party Leader Tim Hudak refused to respond to our questionnaire.
